05 Mar LET’S CHECK OUT SABROSO, MAITAMA
Here we go again with another food tasting, or more like restaurant opening. So a few days back, I got invited to attend the launching of a new restaurant, Sabroso. Sabroso happens to be part of the restaurant company chain behind Miso and Serendib. Miso caters mostly to Thai Cuisine, Serendib offers Sri Lankan, while Sabroso focuses on Mexican.

Anyways, I don’t know why these restaurants have a thing for tacky decor, except for Miso, Miso is such a nice place but I can’t say the same for Serendib and Sabroso, here isn’t the place for your Instagram feed, but it might just be the place for your bellies. Even though the restaurant caters only to Mexican cuisine, on this day there will be a lot of Indian guests, hence, we will be treated to a buffet combination of Mexican and Indian. On the buffet table had varieties ranging from nacho meals, biryanis, pasta, quesadillas and Indian pancakes from the Dosa grill.
Speaking of which, I really do hope that this Dosa grill won’t be sited here when the restaurant actually launches. The smoke from it and the lack of proper ventilation really won’t do the restaurant any good because it was quite suffocating on this day.
Anyways, let’s talk about what I had on my plates.
Penne Alfredo & Chicken Enchilada
There are some dishes that I’m impressed when it’s made in large quantities, and Alfredo is one of them. I could have sworn that it would be trash, but it turned out being the opposite. I cannot assure that this will always be available in their buffet because this is clearly an Italian dish, hence doesn’t fit in a Mexican buffet, but as for taste, this was really nice and had the complete taste and feel of Alfredo.
Chicken Enchilada is a Mexican baked chicken dish that I have had just once, and it’s supposed to be a very cheesy dish but this one wasn’t. The presentation on the buffet table also didn’t look like it fits well in a buffet setting, it wasn’t looking appetizing neither in the buffet tray nor nor in the plate. I also couldn’t even get the feel of chicken. To be honest, I don’t even understand this dish, but I could eat it anyways just because my taste palates accepted it.
Now this is something I am familiar with and I loved it! Especially because the shells were thickened enough to hold the inner condiments. I don’t like tacos that are served in thin tortilla breads because I feel like it defeats the purpose of holding the inner condiments in its shells. So yes, I loved these particular tacos.
Veg Biriyani & Goat Meat Stew
The rice was good but I can’t say the same for the goat meat stew. I mean, there was something off about the goat meat it felt quite slimy as if it has been thawed multiple times or something. One thing I don’t understand about restaurateurs is; why would you ask a guest how the food was if you’re going to try and defend your cooking?
One of the restaurant hosts asked me if I enjoyed my meal so I complained about the goat meat and she said “it’s because it’s prepared the Indian way, so it may not fit your taste buds”. So is she trying to tell me that Indians eat slimy goat meat that tastes nearly spoiled? The problem isn’t with the Indian spicing, the problem is with the meat itself. Anyways, I honestly didn’t enjoy this goat meat stew and I didn’t even finish it.
Of course I had to try out the Indian pancakes from the Dosa Grill. It tasted truly like pancakes, except more like crepes and prepared in a different way. I loved it!

If you aren’t familiar with Tamarind, then please don’t order this drink as a first timer. What’s worse is that this one was way too concentrated, maybe lime or water should have been mixed with it or something, but I promise you that if you’re a first timer, then this drink isn’t for you. I had just about 2 sips of this and immediately requested to be served wine because I can’t come and kill myself.
In summary, Sabroso isn’t that fancy type of restaurant but I think if you want to enjoy good Mexican food, then this is your go-to place. The restaurant only served us buffet on this day, but it ordinarily isn’t a buffet restaurant, they cater only to Al La Carte, so ensure to ask for their menu when you visit.
